Dear Mayor and Council (or to the TC or Saanich News, etc.)
Preserving our environment for the well-being of the community and all species that live therein is a critically important responsibility. We all recognize the many threats that endanger it, including climate change, habitat loss and numerous sources of pollution.
The District of Saanich has worked hard to protect our local environment, including identifying rare species and environmentally significant areas (ESAs) through various policies, bylaws and programs over many years. They recognized that poorly regulated urban development leads to habitat loss and is a major threat to the environment. Our local Environmental Development Permit Area (EDPA) bylaw, approved in 2012, provides a means for controlling inappropriate development in ESAs.
We believe that Saanich needs to retain the EDPA bylaw and we support a thorough review of the bylaw to see if improvements are necessary.
Yours truly,
